Postdoctoral position: Soil-crop modelling in a climate change

Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences the Department of Soil and Environment is offering a Postdoctoral position focusing on climate change, how weather extremes and between year variations in climate will affect crop yields and nitrate leaching from arable land, in a changing climate.

About SLU

The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) develops the understanding and sustainable use and management of biological natural resources.

The university ranks well internationally within its subject areas. SLU is a research-intensive university that also offers unique degree programmes in for example rural development and natural resource management, environmental economics, animal science and landscape architecture.

The department conducts research, environmental monitoring and education related to soils, environment and sustainable land use.

A stimulating scientific environment among 130 employees, in the Soil-Water-Environment building at the SLU Ultuna campus in Uppsala and including a field research station in Skara.

Postdoctoral position on Climage change

The aim of this post-doc is to explore how between year variations in climate change and weather extremes affect yield levels and nitrate leaching from arable land, based on modelling and data from selected fields and regions within the Swedish environmental monitoring & assessment program.

The work includes statistical analysis of existing data, as well as process-oriented water-carbon-nitrogen modelling. More specifically it will cover:

  • Statistical analysis of yields and nitrate-leaching in relation to land use, agricultural management and variations in weather and climate change including extreme weather episodes.
  • Parameterisation of a water-carbon-nitrogen model for simulations of crop-yields and nitrate leaching under present and future climatic conditions (for selected fields and regions).
  • Scenario-modelling based on regional climate scenarios provided by the Swedish Met Office (Rossby Centre).

Qualifications

Applicants should have a PhD in a relevant field, e.g. system ecology, environmental sciences, soil or earth sciences, hydrology, biology or agronomy.

Experience from ecosystem modelling and/or soil-crop modelling is required, as well as skills in statistical analysis and programming, e.g. Matlab or R.

Experience and competence in using GIS is merit. In addition, emphasis will be put on proven ability to work independently as well as in a team, scientific publication,  communication skills, motivation and interest for developing as a researcher.

Candidates should have obtained their doctoral degree within the last five years (2015 or later).

Excellent communication skills in English (written and oral) are required.
